I am getting error message -- "Not enough available memory (RAM)" to open program from start menu. Have 640 RAM so am confused. Also, 9 GB on hard drive available.

I can open Photoshop and all other programs. Have reinstalled but still--same problem.

Does the Illustrator splash screen appear first or after the memory error message? If the splash screen appears first, keep an eye on the startup items that flash by and see what the last item was. Illustrator may be choking on a bum font or plugin.

Read Jimoblak reply and it was very helpful. Watched closely the opening splash screen--all plug-ins load correctly but the program was stalling on 'loading start-up' segment.

I shut down several little programs recently installed (before that no problem with Illustrator).

Illustrator seems to boot-up with consistency on a clean start-up but still gets weird after running other programs.

But it is opening and working.
