IIS as a Firmware Server and "realm=libwww-unknown" Error

All,

Trying to move our firmware server from MV_IPTel to IIS. I have it working just fine for grabbibng firmware and reading the phone backup files. But, for the life of me I cannot get the phone to be able to backup its settings. Everytime I do, I get a Backup Failed and the message "realm=lib

http://www-unknown"

in the display. We ONLY get this error during the backup process.

Any thoughts? It must be a permissions thing on the IIS but cannot find anything that will correct it.

Yeah

I know exactly what this is

The ability to do an unauthenticated WEBDAV read/write has been removed in IIS7. This is the phoen asking you to provide some credentials for it to use to read and write your backup


How to fix....

You can prefix the url with soem credentials i.e

http://user:pass@myserverorip

which is a nasty way of doing it, cos the credentials have to be stored in yor 46xxsettings file.

You can also use soem kind of wierd certificate enrollment method - google for SCEP. It's complex and involved

best answer? Use a different webserver e.g. Apache and sidestep a world of pain!

I highly recommend simply using the utility server to hand out firmware, as well as be the backup/restore point.

Having the credentials in the settings file really isn't an issue for us. But, what credentials do you define and where?

If I was in control of everything, I would probably roll out Apache, but, the network group handles everything the fact we want to spin up a web server on each of our server platforms in each region, I'm kind of stuck with IIS.

We don't have a Utility Server. In addition, we have 5800+ end points across 30 offices nationwide, so we are looking at setting up a web server in each region to keep the phones talking in their own local network vs. traversing our MPLS network.

To be fair, the chatter from the phones is pretty lightweight. At least in our setup which is broadly similar (about half the size in user count and sites)

In terms of permissions, i built a local user on the iis server and set folder permissions on the relevant folder. I then had to tweak the webdav permissions to allow that user to read write the virtual directory. You can test it from a windows machine by mapping a webdav drive. You should then be able to run a backup from the phone.

I'm out of the office now (bst timezone) but i'll check it out tomorrow on my firmware server

I can't even get the phone to save the backup in Apache either. Got it reading just fine, but the backup still fails with Apache. Any thoughts?

I'm not a web guy either... and my experience with apache is even less wide than with IIS

I'd guess (and it is only a guess) that the rights to write to the backup folder are not set for either the apache service account or for the user that apache is impersonating
