Computer started this morning with the yellow update shield stuck at 27% download. Updated/Scanned for virsues and there were none. No spyware to speak of. (Msconfig)Startup is as clean as possible. There were a couple of strange services that Windows didnt recognize. Once I unchecked those, I was able to restart properly. I tried going to services to Automatic Updates and restart the service and it was stuck at pending stop. Unchecked Auto Updates from services, rebooted, restart servie with no problem. In the event viewer there are several services with red X'x.

Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the BITS service.

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the SharedAccess service.

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the AudioSrv service.

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the HidServ service.

Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the Schedule service.

The system runs very quickly and efficeintly. I cant think of what is wrong. Maybe reappyl the service pack 2 from disc? Please help. Thanks.

BITS is recquired to use windowsupdate.

You might try, as you suggested, reinstalling SP2.

Have you tried Windows Update again and checked if you can download now? Is the problem still there?

If you still can't connect or download, what errors are being repeated in the Event Viewer?

Do you have a Legal version of XP????
the Update site hangs at times if the verison is not legal.

This is a legal version from Dell. I can browse Ok. I can download Ok. But as soon as I try to go to the Windows Update, it freezes. I did reaply the service pack again. Still has problems shutting down properly/

try this
open notepad and copy between the ----cut---- the paste to notepad
save the file as(all files) update.bat

or run the commands individually in the START--Run

-----cut-----

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

-----cut-----

That might fix the issue

Can anyone tell me how the inability to shut down properly and winodws update not working are related? I did try a system restore but since it wont shut down, I cant revert to a previous time.
I will try your suggestions today. Thanks.

Sorry I havent gotten back sooner. I tried all the suggestions above and to no avail I am still at square one, with no sucessful solution. What happens is when I revert using system restore from safe mode, I can shut down sucessfully. But as soon as I try and use Windows update, the Iexplore window freezes and I can no longer sucessfully shut down. I am, for the first time just completly stumped. Any more suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A couple of odd things which might be causing problems.

Description of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)

Are you using a Download Manager.

Any Pop-up blockers, in IE, a firewall, or Google Toolbar.

Are you trying this as an Administrator user?

Is anything blocking ActiveX, Java Applets, Java or VBS Scripting?

Microsoft online support should be able to help you further with this type of problem.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
