IE6/Win98 problem?

Explorer ver. 5.5 or 6 when clicking on some java links it will not render but give me an "error on page" message. This is on win 98 second edition. When I use the same browser ver. on another win 98 machine or a win 95, I don't get these errors. Netscape renders these links fine on all OS's. It just seems to be this one win98 with Explorer. Explorer has been updated and have all updates on this OS.
No virus' detected. Any ideas on this puzzler?

You might try this..

Go to "Tools" > "Internet Options" > "Advanced" tab > Uncheck the item
marked "Display notification about every script error". If you have a
debugger such as MS Interdev the uncheck the checkbox marked "Disable
script debugging" if it's checked. smitee

Thankyou smitee for your thoughts on this. The browser options were set to your suggestions. But still will not render certain links. It seems to be a problem with this OS and browser. I feel there might be a windows file that is bad that is causing this dilemma. I really don't want to re-install Windows again.

Go to Start>Run, type msconfig, click the statup tab and make sure the Machine Debug Manager entry is unchecked.

You could also download the latest Java Virtual Machine build 3805 here:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/vm/Install/3805/W9XNT4MeXP/EN-US/msjavx86.exe

Then look in c:\windows for a file called vminst.log. Look over the contents and post back with details.

Here is the vminst.log. Yes I do have the latest version of the java VM 3805.
I might add that I do webpages for different places including the Indianapolis Sym. Orch.

Here also on the internet only, IE6 doesn't render some of the links too but on the home computer, it renders fine, while Netscape doesn't have this problem at all. IE5 on my other computer also doesn't have this problem.

Try the Internet Explorer repair feature first. Go to Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs, scroll down until you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5/6 & Internet Tools, click the Add/Remove button and select repair.

IF THAT DOESN'T WORK:
In Internet Explorer, go to Tools>Internet Options, click the Security tab , then the Custom Level button. Under ActiveX Controls and plugins, set it up like this:

Download Signed ActiveX Controls and plugins...Prompt
Download unsigned ActiveX Controls...Disable
Inirialize and script ActiveX Controls not marked as safe...Disable
Run ActiveX Controls and plugins...Enable
Script ActiveX Controls marked safe for scripting...Enable.

Then scroll down to the Microsoft VM and change that to:
Medium Security.

Then scroll to the Scripting section and make sure all 3 boxes are enabled. Then shutdown and restart.

Thank again for your suggestions. Everything in options are set correct. I have no problem getting into any website. The problem is certain links within a site may not work, giving me a "error on page" message. I have the same ver. browser and ver. 5.0 on another machine which doesn't give me this error and works fine. On this computer only is the problem. And on this win98 machine No problem with Netscape.
A real puzzler, huh?

Just because the version and OS are the same, doesn't mean that the browser is using the same components & settings. Do you have any 3rd-party software installed that might be interferring with browser settings?

I would try what reghakr suggested a couple posts ago...run the repair option on IE 5.5 from Add/Remove and reboot.

If that doesn't help, try this:

- Tools->Internet Options->Advanced and click Restore Defaults
- Under the Security Tab, just click Default Level with Internet highlighted at the top to set it to Medium
- Back on the general tab, delete all temp internet files including offline content, clear history, and click settings->view files and wipe out all remaining cookies.
- On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings and verify you don't have anything checked (I'm assuming you don't go through a proxy server that requires additional settings)
- Close and relaunch Internet Explorer


Please try everything suggested here in one full session even if you've done part of it already. Let me know if it makes a difference...

Thank you for answering. Yes I did what you suggested and still the same problem. No, 3rd-party software installed. Everything now is set back to default.
I run the internet through DSL. I am using ZoneAlarm ver. 3. Even with it not loaded, the same problem. My feeling again is some file within windows that is causing this and not the settings on IE. The same with IE 5.5 and ver. 6. It only seems to be a problem with just a few java links and not all. This is why I don't want to re-install Win98. Win 98 is acting ok otherwise.
