I've just set up a user with a brand new machine running Windows XP Pro and Office XP SBE. Everything was running smoothly at first, but after a few hours, when she opens IE6 to web browse it is incredibly slow.

I checked Task Manager and it showed that IE was using almost all of the CPU!

Shutting down all other software didn't make a difference. Rebooting cleared the problem - this maybe an answer, but it isn't the one she wants.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have they downloaded any toolbar add ins like the Yahoo Companion or the google bar? These are notorious for doing this and even the support departments in the respective companies freely admit that there is a problem on some machines.

Also check out Hijack This it will show you what is starting along with Internet Explorer.

Hope This helps.

Any feed back is appreciated.

If I had to guess I would say it was the Welchia virus. Run at least Trend Housecall on the machine: faq760-3862

There are some large ISP domains where a non-firewall protected machine will be infected within 2.5 minutes of internet access.

Other issues:

. Service Pack 1 is installed?
. Head to the Windows Update site and you should receive an update to IE;
. You likely need a JVM update as well;

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing >
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions
