On Win Xp Pro, IE6 on closedown; the process remains in the task manager and disables the taskbar until the process is manually terminated.

Tried reinstalling IE6 to no avail.

Any ideas much appreciated.

I had someone today with that same issue, but on Win98. He upgraded IE from 5.0 to 6.0 (similiar to you re-installing IE), and he still would close IE, and the process would stay in the background for awhile. In his case, however, he would get "Internet Explorer encountered an unexpected error and needs to be shut down". We narrowed the problem down to 1 of 2 programs he had running in the background. McAfee Viruscan (likely candidate) or a program that allows his company to update his software over his dsl connection automatically (can't remember the name of the program). What you can try is going to Start, Run, and type in msconfig. Hit the startup tab at the top, and start unchecking things you absolutely KNOW you do not need to run windows (this is only a temporary troubleshooting step, as you can go back in there later, and just re-check stuff). Restart. If IE is still having the same issue, then it's not related to what you're running in the background. If it's not, then you can go back through msconfig, and start re-checking each individual thing you unchecked 1-by-1 and narrow down the culprit.
