IE6 closes immediately after installing Update (KB883939)

New system: Windows XPpro w/SP2.
IE6 and Outlook will no longer run after trying to update with MS KB883939.
If we run the "sfc /scannow" utility, IE is fixed, but then the update tries to run again and the problem recurs.
No entries in Event Logs.

Any ideas?

This is an update to close a hole in Internet explorer. Have you run your antivirus and adware programs? Also run a disk clean to empty the temp and internet folders. Some malware programs run from the temp folder.
