IE times out - "The connection with the server was reset." 2

I'm running 2000 server and my IE5.5 can't get onto the internet. When I try (msn.com and others) it times out with the error message: "Internet Explorer cannot open the site http:\msn.com. The connection with the server was reset."

What do I need to do? Everything else is working fine.

By, 'everything else is working fine', do you mean other than internet sites? If so, could be a DNS problem, your ISP, or problems at the site.

Kind of hard to say, unless you're more specific!

No internet sites work. But all other applications work great (i.e. WORD, Excel, etc)

If you've not changed your internet settings, or modem settings then it's probably either a DNS problem or your ISP. If you can call your ISP by phone, do so. Most likely that is the explanation. I'm afraid ISP's are not too anxious to broadcast that they have problems. Just today for instance, we had some problems with our ISP and called them, they were aware of it, and the problem was not with them. Apparently it was with some MS sites as we could not get msn.com and others that they own the servers for. We could get to Yahoo, Google, etc. just not anything related to MS, i.e., MSNBC, Slate, Underwire, Hotmail, etc.

Give 'em a call.

might be router trouble If in doubt get the Ball Pein Hammer out

It was the router. When I unplugged it from the router then into a hub (which is connected to the router) it worked.
