I have an XP machine with a new install on it (Compaq P3 800 256 MB Ram) . I put a wireless lan card in it and connected to my DSL and it is VERY slow and intermittent on the web. One time it will hit Yahoo and the next time it won't. Gets very long delays before pulling up websites or, the majority of the time gets "page not found" error when it tries to go from one website to another. Definetely slower than even dialup......any ideas on what to check?

We need more info here, DSL modem, wireless router ? This is sometime cause by MTU router seting (auto sometime dose not work) MTU=1492 for AOL=1400, also haveing 2 router back to back in not a good idea.

DSL wireless router (2wire SBC setup)....I just removed the wireless USB card from my regular desktop machine that has no problems and put it in this machine (both machines are the same Compaq Deskpro 800 series). But for some reason this one is is VERY slow and intermittent. I can have 2- 4 machines on this wireless network and have no problems. Maybe a little performance degradation but that's all. I made sure all other machines were off the internet just to make sure this machines problem wasn't bandwidth.

I believe allteltec has the clue: you need to set both the router and the client MTU value from its default of 1500.

. first, test for the appropriate value

. second, for client MTU, use DRTCP

As alltec mentioned above, then go to the router and set a Manual MTU value that matches the client.

I notice you did not mention the actual connection speed you are seeing from your wireless adapter. It is possible a configuration issue or interference is leading to the adapter connection speed being suboptimal.

Not sure, I will check that. I was going toward the direction of it being a machine/OS problem as the very same NIC in a very similar machine does not have the problem and neither do the other machines I bring onto the wireless network. No configuration changes were done on any other machines other than passing in the SBC network key for the router and they work fine.
