I came across this problem last week!
"Internet Explorer Icon on Win XP Pro desktop, creates additional IE Shortcuts when you doulble click on it??? You cannot go to the internet through this! Just keeps creating additional IE shortcuts each time you double click on it!!!!!

This is the original IE Icon, NOT A SHORTCUT!

The only temporary fix was to add an additional IE Shortcut ICON to the desktop. I made a copy from the startmenu which is the only one that works?

Not infected with no virus?

What do you think???

Not a virus, but malware all the same.

After checking as per "Bcastner".

You could use Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. Select Add/Remove Windows Components.

Uncheck the entry for Internet Explorer. Press Next. This will remove all IE and Outlook Express icons.

Repeat the process, this time reselect and check Internet Explorer. Press Next. This will restore fresh icons that were previously removed. This option only repairs icons and shortcuts of IE and Outlook Express.
