After a reinstall of the OS (Win2KPRO) curious things happen:

IE 6.0X
After a few minutes using IE an error invarably occurs: the "svchost.exe" reports trying to acces a memory segment but the segment "can't be read" (and the Visual C++ debugger states "access violation" but nothing appears in the Event Viewer). Then IE stops working as well as other thíngs (Outlook, the Windows Management Console and other html-ish apps).

Modem
Works as before with the exception it refuses to shut the connection down when "disconnect" is ordered from the tray.

I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting this...

Regard everybody

Try forum616. This does not sound like a hardware problem. Scan your computer for worms/virii. Make sure it is current on updates and patches.
