Hi all,
having searched and not found, i put it to you...

windows 2000 sp4, IE6, Office XP
all with multilanguage packs installed

Problems:

With IE, i ca no longer type text into textboxes.
With Outlook XP, most messages i click to reply to make Outlook crash (good old, send report to MS time)... except when i choose Word as my mail editor (which i don not want to do)
With W2k, add/remove progs just shows icons + remove button, no text, no name of software....

most searches came up with XP probs and solutions... i cant find anything that describes my prob on 2000...

for info... this wasn't in my MCP ...

any ideas guys n gals ??

You first problem sounds like a DLL registration is missing. Use IEFix:
Your other problems suggest an issue with notepad.exe.

. Notepad is a very popular malware attack surfce. Check that you only have one notepad.exe in %windir%\system32 and no other copy; Verify the Version information of the copy of notepad.exe that you do have.

. Make sure there is no notepad.exe link on the desktop

Notepad: version 5 build 2195 (sp4)

i have a notepad.exe in c:\winnt,
one in \system32, and one in \system32\dllcache
all 3 dated on 24/07/2002 at 14:00...

i dont have a link on the desktop to the exe, just to a txt file i made myself...

am trying to run IEFix, but having trouble finding the files it needs (dont have CD... :/)

IEFix will reregister MSHTML.DLL. As the files was changed often by Hotfixes and Cumulative Updates for IE, it is possible you have the wrong version.

A reinstall of IE would help.

For the Add/Remove issue:

. See if there is a IconDisplay value with a negative number in the listed entries.

You can either remove the negative number or remove the last application listed: Start/Run/Regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\

Each application installed will have an entry.

The second area to check is the sourcing of the displayed text used to enumerate Add/Remove entries.
When you use Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs, some 32bit programs are missing from the display?

The display is built by retrieving:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\<ProgramKey>\DisplayName
Only entries with a Value Name of DisplayName are supposed to be listed. If you find an entry with a DisplayName > 64 characters it can stop the enumeration.
Check the Value DisplayName under each entry.

it appears it was all down to IE going tits up....

a full reinstall thx to & bill .....

html is all over the place in windows, one thing goes wrong and the whole lot drops like a sack of spuds!

cheers bcastner
