IDE Controller problem on new motherboard

I just bought a new motherboard (SL-75DRV2 Socket A) using AMD processor and it will not recognize my hard drive or cd-rw. Cd-rw is new and the hard drive is a few months old. Motherboard uses utlra ide, but I thought that it would be able to see older ide controllers. Any suggestions how I can get the mainboard to recognize the drives?

Have you been playing around with the BIOS ?

There is NO reason in the world that a NEW and FULLY FUNCTIONAL mainboard like that won't recognize ANY hard drive that you install,,,,,,,,, that is 5 years old or newer.
The problem does not lie in the hard drive or CD-RW.

Did you hook the 2 drives together ? (Don't !)

Did you set the drives on the proper IDE channels ?

BIOS - should be left at DEFAULTS .... unless you know
Exactly what you are doing.

Hard drive should be set by itself on PRIMARY, and the PINS on the hard drive should be set correctly.
**** Did you check to make sure that you have the PINs set correctly?
SOLO - hard drive
Master Hard drive ......
>>> Check the HD manufacturers web-site for the PIN settings if they are not clearly marked on the HD, which they should be.

Or to continue did you put them on the same IDE cable and have both jumpered as master.
Did you go into the BIOS and set it to auto for the device detection on the IDE.

I had been playing with the bios all night and I finally solved my problem. I had to use the older IDE cable from my older machine. The new cable wouldn't work. I also linked the CD-RW and hard drive together. Your saying I shouldn't that? My CD-RW is brand new and is ATAPI/EIDE. Should I use IDE slot #2 for that and slot #1 for my hard drive?

Yes indeedy! Putting your writer on the same channel as your HD will slow it down big time! as it is a much slower device.
Put it on IDE2
Also if your HD is ATA66 or above! you should be using a fine 80 IDE cable to maximise data transfer. (should have come with the moby?) is this the one thats faulty? get it swopped at the suppliers. Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

Assuming that your connectors and master/slave jumpers are correct, perhaps you have a problem that plagued me for a few days.

After installing special IDE driver from Motherboard CD, I had to change the boot sequence as follows.

1st boot device: Floppy disk
2nd boot device: Disabled (normally the C-Drive)
3rd boot device: CD ROM
4th boot device: Special IDE controller. Dinosaur from prehistoric mainframe era
Eschew obfuscation!
