Hi all- I have a cable modem that I use with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on a win98 machine to split the connection amongst 3 computers in my house. I am upgrading the ICS machine to win2k server. I want to run win2k server with Active Directory and split the internet connection using Network Address Translation (NAT) but I have a few concerns. I do not know much about Cable Modems, but I think the way it works is that we are assigned a unique computer name (53234-1A, or something like that) which is authorized on the @home network. We also need to be a member of the @home workgroup (this is our current configuration). The problem: can't be a member of a domain running Active Directory AND be a member of the @home workgroup at the same time. Does anyone know a way around this? I know I could just demote my server, make it a stand-alone server (no AD), join the @home workgroup and run ICS, but I don't want to give in! Any suggestions?

First, @home is no longer... These are settings from an install before Comcast (or whoever took it over)used. There is no more workgroup nor is there a UID. The ISP assigns one (unless you get more than one) IP address that is picked up by your modem. Using the Win2K box as the primary, then NAT to the other computers on your network will work just fine.

Hope this helps, WMH

WMH- thank you for your advise. I was not aware of the change. I hope I am correct in assuming that my modem will pick up a dynamic address and I am free to configure the rest of my LAN as I please. Thanks again.
