Is there a way to have an Icon on my desktop that immediately shuts down the PC (ie without having to go via the Start menu, and without having to choose Turn Off Computer rather than Restart or Cancel) - in other words a one-click shutdown....?

thanks for any help

right click a blank area of the desktop.
New, Shortcut
Browse to C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe

Continue and save the shortcut to the desktop.

Right-click the shortcut, Properties, and edit the Target line. It should read like this:

%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00

If your power options are set for this (Power Options/ Advanced) you can achieve the same result by pressing the power off button once for a controlled shutdown.

Similar to above:

On the Windows desktop, right-click and select New and Shortcut.

If you are using Windows XP, in the command line path, type the following exactly:
SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

Please note the spaces before the hyphens and after "t".

Click Next, name the shortcut and click Finish. Now, to shutdown Windows, just double-click this shortcut.
