I need assistance in recovering from my own incompetence.

I have a VB application that displays and Edits icons (*.ico). It works fine but ...

I opened an icon file with it by double clicking on the file in Windows Explorer. It came up with the standard "select an application to open this file" dialog. I failed to notice that the "always open this type of file with this application" was checked. The O/S is Win98.

Now, in Windows Explorer, all my icons display the icon associated with the application rather than the icon graphic that the icon file contains.

Does anyone know how to recover from this so that the icons once again display their contents in Explorer rather than the icon associated with the application that opens them?

Goto the Tools menu then Folder Options then the FileTypes Tab, find the .ico filetype in the list and delete the association.

Thanks ... already tried that.

Now all icons display the default icon (the Windows flag).

Goto this key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico
delete the default value of icofile
then add the key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ico\DefaultIcon
and change the default value to %1
Reboot and you should be back in action.

Great stuff. My icons have come back to life. Thanks.
