iBook G4 14" with cd/DVD Drive problems

Heres the problem. Sometimes the iBook recognizes the drive, other times it does not. When it does and you put a cd/dvd in the drive, it spits it right back out. I've run some diagnostics and other tests and I get no red flags. Is this a drive problem? Other hardware problem? It does not seem to be a software issue. If the drive needs to be replaced, how tricky is it?
