I just got this nice old IBM 570E laptop,
it had W98 se and the system was running poorly so I formatted it and installed W2k,
but now upon cold boot I often get the white screen instead of a black screen with the IBM logo,
(this is happening before POST and the initialization beep)
now let's if I can make a little "clearer" this is not happening all the time but often enough to bother me.
I like to add that once it boots normally (after 5 or 6 retry) the screen has no problem with color or depth, and when booted and warm, the reboot works normal as well.
This is happening mostly after the putter sits shut down for a day or so

Im going to go out on a limb and maybe suggest that it is your cmos battery that is extremely low/damaged and i do believe that white screen is the IBM's way of resetting the cmos. That would explain why if you let it sit shut down for over a day, the battery would die, thus clearing your cmos and when the white screen appears, that is IBM putting all the values back in order.

Remember, I am no where near 100% on this and would be an avenue to research.
