I have a IBM TP 380ed runs Windows 98SE. It does not have USB port. I bought Dock Station which does have usb port. Computer will not recognize USB on dock stn. I have reinstalled win98 SE while docked. Still no USB. Any help on how to get USB will be greatly appreciated.

Did you use the IBM (OEM) ThinkPad version of Win98SE, or just a generic version of SE? Does your Hardware Profile (Control Panel) show two profiles - one for docked and one for undocked? Does it recognize when it's docked?

Hi Dreamland...Thanks for the response. Windows 98se is generic full version. There is only one hardware profile and the computer recognizes the dock.

Dick - IBM has a set of drivers for the dock's hardware. Much of it was probably recognized by 98 already (serial, parallel ports, LAN, etc.) but you will need to dig up the drivers specific to the USB port for that docking station. They are not the drivers written specifically for the 380ED laptop. The docking stations actually shipped with their own disks, as several models of laptops probably could use that same dock.

Which model is the docking station? Best bet is to check IBM's site itself for downloadable drivers or Google on the dock's model number as a last resort. I can dig up some of the more recent model dock drivers, but I don't know if I can help for anything that works with the 380. Reply back with the model number if you can't find anything at IBM.

Hi Dreamland
Thanks again for the response. The dock is:
P/N 11j8998
FRU P/N 11j9000
Thanks

I think I may be at the end of the line. I took your suggestion and went to IBM's site. I found a driver download to add USB to windows 98. I thought I was home free. After downloading it and while installing it, a screen came up stating either my operating system or my computer does not support USB. It's not the OS so it has to be that this computer model does not support USB. The strange thing is that the USB port has power in it. When I connected a card reader to it, the reader's LED came on.
I think I will look for a PCMCIA usb card. Do you think that will work?
Thanks...Dick
