I have been bequeathed an old IBM PS2 8570

When it boots it gives the error code 162 then 163. I hear this has something to do with peripherals - could it be a new monitor?

When I press F1 I get a menu across the bottom showing such things as "run" "save" etc

Can anyone give me an indication as to whether this machine is in a fit state for a dos/windows install and if so how do I go about it?

Thanks very much for any input you can give.

I am not familiar with error codes 162 and 163.
Also, do not know the model of am IBM 8570. What you said about the menu on the bottom is from Basic and\or GW-Basic programing. I assume that your machine is booting into
MS-DOS and somehow is going to Basic programing.

Your machine is going into IBM's rom-basic because it has a problem with the hard drive.
With a new battery and a setup disk you might have a chance. Ed Fair

Thanks for your help guys...

OK next problem - the case is locked and I don't have the key. Do I need to change the battery or can I get round it another way?

Error codes on IBM PC -- 162 and 163 says that the date and time are not set up; unfortunately to do this you must have an IBM setup diskette for the particular model.
As far as the key goes most any IBM PS/2 key will work.

Once you have the disk, you can set the sruff and it will hold until the power is shut down.
But you will want to change the battery. It is a royal pain to have to enter setup every time you power up. Ed Fair

Thanks guys.

I'm really showing my ignorance here -

Is the setup diskette the same as a reference disk. In which case - I already have one of those and it wont boot from it.

Also edfair what do you mean by sruff?

Finally - where do I get any kind of PS/2 key from?

If you have a 8570/80 Reference disk and it will not boot from POR. Check the diskette on another PC. If the diskette is good you may have a bad diskette drive. If you get in touch with meI can help more.

typo for stuff, as in setup values. Ed Fair
