I have the IBM Deathstar problem.

Valuable data (personal) kaput.

I have bought a USB to ATA/SATA/IDE connector to try and recover data but so far no good.

I am going to try a couple of days in the freezer next but was wondering, if I remove the cover exposing the disc & pickup arm, whats the chance of me manoevering the pickup manually till it finds data?

Anyone else have any good suggestions.

Not going to pay loads to get info recovered and doubt if re-planting the disk in another chassis is likely to happen.

open it up and get any dust or touch it....BAM!....no more data

if it is not heat related the freezer method may make things totally unrecoverable or not work at all

About the same chance as winning all the lotteries in the world in the same week and simultaneously giving birth to sextuplets while accepting a knighthood and being canonized by the pope. LOL

Follow wahnula's advice if the drive can be seen by the BIOS.

Damn!...I wanted to win the lottery...just one....lol

only thing good about opening a drive is you get great coffee cup coasters using the platters and the magnets are very strong and are great for holding up the artwork that kids pile on to you to put on the fridge...

Thanks for the replies, guys.

No, BIOS doesn't know the drive is there. It just clicks ans doesn't read.

So not much luck if I open it then, huh?

Hunted about and there seems to be no advice available that might help other than the donor method so first I think I'll try the freezer and then, if no joy, it'll be the Microwave or the dishwasher.

Any other useful suggestions, please don't hesitate,
Cheers
