Ok, I'm wanting to get two FAST IDE hardrives and use raid.

I already know exactly what i wanna do, and I am not worried so much about size as I am about SPEED!!!!

I read on tomshardware.com that the 75gxp was the fastest, but didn't compare it with any of the other two, and I'm not sure how old the review is. If anyone KNOWS which is the fastest, please let me know. =)

TIA

Your access speed information of how many milliseconds shall decide the issue. Given the same access speed but different capacities ... the lower capacity harddisk will be faster in practical use. I dont know the specifications of the ones you are mentioning. :-) ramani :-9

From what I understand, the Deskstar GXPs have a reliability issue. Here's just one thread I found on the subject;

and this article in The Register seems to agree

I'd put reliability over speed any day.

My advice: Go for Maxtor - they're fast AND reliable (and, I understand, about to bring out a 180Gb model).

My $0.02

my friend found a seagate disk that was either 20/25 gigs...

7200 rpm ata/100, 8.2ms, the works!

But I looked on seagate's website and copied the model number for the

30 gig
7200 rpm
ultra ata/100
8.2 ms

and pasted it into pricewatch.com's search.

I wasn't able to find ANYTHING! Nor, was I able to find any of the other drives that were 7200 rpm 8.2 ms and ultra ata/100.

I am getting a little irritated... =|

I also found a drive that had 8.0 ms!!! it was ultra ata/100 and 7200 rpm, but i didn't see anything at all about a cache buffer.... The size was 40 gigs, or was it 45.... ?
the drive was made by COMPAQ!!!!!

I never knew they made hard disks...
Anyone have that drive? It's fast, but it's also over 200 bucks US!

In either case, I want a RELIABLE drive, that is fast, and atleast 20/25 gigs.

I would prefer to stay below 40/45 gigs because of thermal heat and power consumption.

So I know that maxtor and seagate are good, I've also heard that fujitsu makes nice drives...

Any suggestions on a hardrive to get? Remember, I'm gonna use two of whatever to make a raid array.

TIA

IBM 60GXP won the best hard drive of 2001 in the latest issue of Maximum PC. If you read the article, it explains that unlike other hard drives of this kind of compacity, it squeezes 60 gigs onto just 3 platters. Most hard drives use 5 or more. This means that the head can access areas of the disk with less movement resulting in faster transfer times.

I believe this hard drive is able to reach transfer speeds of 39 MB/s, and even faster in a RAID setup. Try comparing that to any of the competition!

Out of the three: IBM 60GXP, 75GXP, & 120GXP
I'm not sure if all three models use the same technology. If they do, then 75 and 120GXP models would have platters with a higher density meaning faster transfer speeds.

cdogg gave you a good answer. The IBM 60GXP is arguably the BEST HD on the market today.

I ONLY use IBM and MAXTOR when I build systems.

** NOTE: The IBM 75GXP does have a problem, that is confirmed, but NOT the 60GXP's.
You do not want an IBM that is this model.
Deskstar 75GXP 07N6655- 61.4GB Gig

* Value for dollar is the 40 GIG IBM, at about $115 with shipping............ for one drive.

> $96.00 plus shipping

IBM #IC35L040AVER07 40GB 7200RPM - OEM Deskstar 60GXP Ultra ATA/100 8.5ms Average Seek Time - OEM, Drive Only - 3 year manufacturer

That will make an EXCEPTIONAL RAID array for you.

The 60 GXP is certainly ARGUABLY the best!

I note from the huge thread on the link I posted, that many people have seen issues with those as well. Just because it's not offically confirmed by IBM doesn't mean there isn't a problem. I've sent back 10 60 GXPs so far. I've never sent a Maxtor back.

FWIW.
