My problem is this...I recently removed the hd from my comp and used it in my bro's comp. When i attempted to reinstall the drive in my comp this is what happened. The drive was already formatted/partitioned. I used a win98 boot disk to install win98 b/c my cdrom is non-bootable. The install went smoothly...after it restarted however i get an error msg, basically no boot media found....is their something wrong with my boot sector? Someone told me that old ibm's need a special setup disk in order to install a hd? is this true?

It doesnt always work when you move one hard drive from computer A to computer B. Especially if the motherboards are not identical. The hardware on the motherboards are different, and windows uses different device controllers for different motherboards.

Try going into the BIOS and setting up the Hard Drive for sectors and tracks in the setup program. Reboot the IBM and press F1 to go into the IBM BIOS setup screens. You have to set up the Tracks and Sectors. Usually if you change the hardware configuration, IBM computers may go directly to the BIOS Screen.

This is how every IBM computer weve ever had has worked. My old Aptiva A-40 P133 worked the same way.

I suggest you tell the group your model number of your computer. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

the model # is 6282-36u....

I see you used the partitions and format from computer a, then did the install from computer b.
I have a rule for myself, to avoid things like what you are experiencing:
Always FDISK before a format/install
And ditto on what ceh4702 said.

Ok there seems to be some confusion and after re-reading my original post I see that i was not clear...

Comp A contained my drive.
I removed it and placed it in comp B on primary channel as a secondary slave.
Then after replacing the hd in comp A(yes i checked the jumper settings) I ran into problems.
On my first attempt and subsequent failure at installing win 98, I deleted partition and reformatted drive only to run into exact same problem...bios detects drive correctly and when booting from floppy it finds it fine...but when i reboot after installation it can't find the drive????

Looks like I am having the same problem. I am just replaced the MB on an IBM 300GL (6282-75U) I Formated and installed Win98 on a 2.5GB dirve (did this on another computer) when I try to boot on the 300GL system it sees the drive will not boot to it. If you found/find a fix for your system, please share it with me. I'll do the same. RDODSON4.

Why did you install 98 on another machine? You need to install it on the machine its going run on - the install you've got has all the wrong drivers. As you've just installed fresh, I'd just do it again - in the machine its intended for.

I havent done one of these for a while but if i recall correctly you have to use some IBM prog(s) to set the bios up on the hard drive.
It involves putting the prob on a floppy, using a boot disk to get to dos, and then using this prog on a floppy.
check the ibm website out for info.

I think you're right about the utility disk... better look it up on the IBM site... with a serial number, they can tell you almost anything...

I know i did that for 2 of those ibm 300 units but i am just not sure that you have to do this step for sure, it could be that its optional, i just cant remember for sure.
But if you have checked with ibm and you cant find the info, please email me at kingbee@cogeco.ca and i will look it up for you, i remember putting the info on a cdrom or something somewhere but i have hundreds of them so.....
But if you cant get the help you need email me and i will put in a bit of time and try and help you out.
But you should be able to get the same progs right from IBM support.
thanks
