I would like to setup logging on a cisco 1721
Having issues that would be far better to troubleshoot if I knew what the Serial Interface 0 was seeing
what I am looking for is detail on TCP/UDP session requests and teardowns
I have tried

logging 192.168.xxx.xxx (my syslog server)
logging trap debugging
logging on

and all I get on the syslog is minor information, I thought logging trap debugging would give more then just a few lines

You will need to enable debugging using the DEBUG command. Be careful how you use this command as it could degrade the performance of your router. You may want to create an access-list to selective debug packets that are of interest to you.

you could also hook up a laptop the box in question using a terminal program and serial cable. enable debugging only on the services that you want to see and enable logging.

even better yet plug in a packet sniffer and turn on logging and you can see all the tcp information you could ever want. you can get a free trial version of commview from

use either a inline hub or if you have switch configure a monitoring port and plug the sniffer into that port and set it to monitor the router port.
