Hi,

I have multiple domains setup through exchange 5.5 IMS. What I need to do with one of the domains is have all of the mail for the domain delivered into one mailbox (like ISP's do global pop3 style) then the customer can collect the mail over the Internet and sort the mail at their end.

I can't see quite how you do it, any ideas anyone?

Thank you

Hi,

This is very easy. You must created a MX record for your Domain Zone. This may be a secondary Mx or primary depending on your needs.(Usally Secondary for Queueing) The MX will point to the Email address to queue your mail. If you choose this option though you will have to have an external email routing program to distibute mail. The best option is always ETRN or TRN. The only thing is the other end must support it also. You will make the DNS changes or your ISP will if their hosting your Domain(S).

Actually, this isn't a DNS issue at all, and the tool we have at hand is Exchange 5.5, not something else. I assume that mail can arrive at the server, you just want to figure out how to bundle it into a single box.

The only thing I can think of right off-hand is to have a single user account, and when you go to add a new user on the Exchange server, you simply open that account and add another valid SMTP address to the list of addresses that the account responds to. Then a remote system could dial-up, authenticate, and download all of the mail from that single Exchange mailbox. At the other end, a filtering rule-set could distribute the mail, depending on who it was originally addressed to.

This solution just requires that all valid emails have an entry on the Exchange server. I don't know of a way of just grabbing all mail with the @bigco.com extension and putting them in a mailbox. But maybe one could use a wildcard. I've never seen it done though.

What you have is the following senario:

Objective: You wish to have all mail for domain MYDOMAIN.COM goto a SINGLE POP3 account? Allowing a person to retrieve all mail for the DOMAIN from a standard EXCHANGE POP3 account, and then distribute as they wish.

Solution1: Create an MX record in DNS Redirecting all mail to MYACCOUNT@HOSTEXCHANGESERVER.com then all mail for that domain will be routed to pop3 on your exchange server.

Remember that mail is routed by resolving DNS.(Domain name) this is how mail is delivered accross the Internet. No other way. EB

Cool, Eightball. Your first explanation wasn't as clear on how the redirect actually worked. I'd never seen an MX record pointing at an account before. Thanks for your expertise.

What can I say about that? you guys saved my life :)
Thanks especially to Eightball, I never thought it would come down to a DNS solution.... Brilliant!

I needed to have this solution for tomorrow (15th) !!

Thanks again!
