I have an IBM desktar 80GB that I need a controller for. I am using a locator service is trying to locate the same drive from the same batch using the model number and "MLC" number but no luck thus far. I need to locate the card to see if I can salvage my hard drive data. I have received quotes from data recovery companies ranging from 1,150 to 4,500. I rather try getting a new like-drive, take its controller and see if that fixes it before I send it in.

How did the drive go bad you might ask and why do I think is the controller? Here is what happened; I was trying to re-install WINME to repair some files that were causing my system to run all sluggish. After reinstalling winme and rebooting the system would not go past the hour glass to access the icons on my desktop...the blue screen would sit there with the hour-glass spinning. I turned the system off and tried to swap the drives side to side to copy some of the system files from the other drive when the casing of the other drive touched the drive in question making it start the clicking sound. The drive was working fine till then. The problem seems to be electronics and not mechanical.

Any ideas as to how I can locate a new controller, another company name etc?

Thanks in advance!
