I apologize for posting this twice and did not know where else to post this.

I have a quick question and clarification

I'm the moderator for a newsmagazine online forum and have the following question:

In one of the forums I have noticed one person with 15 names coming from the same IP, I questioned two of the names at ramdom via private message as to where they were connecting from and both replied

1. From europe and
2. Fron California

The user from California is using AOL and I don't know what 1 is using.

let me ask you this. Is is conceivable that even though both names have the same IP they are both different people in different part of the world???

or how would I explain one user with multiple names?????

Would it be AOL that's using the same IP??

thanks

Hi, I think that the server that is actually posting the message is the IP address that would appear, not necessarily the users home IP address.

Try pinging the IP addresses and see what they resolve to..

I bet AOL hands out dialup users a private IP and they all look like they're coming from the same public IP

Thanks,

You know, I get data on some of them. Other time out.

All AOL users go through their proxy servers in Virginia, and can (and do) have a different IP for every page they visit, and several AOL users could have the same IP at any given time. I've only seen around 6 IPs for AOL users in logs.

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

It's confusing because the problem I'm having is that person 1
logs in saying somethign usefull then person 2 with the same IP comes in to argue. then person 3 agrees with one of them....

I also found out that two ppl are relatives by private messages but the rest I have no idea why they would have the same IP unless is the same person and or different ppl in the house.... oh well. Thanks all
