I know I am new here, but can someone tell me what the heck is the difference between Win98 and Win ME? I currently use Win98 and would like to know why I should even think about Win ME. Thanks

You shouldn't, Win98 is fine for another year or 2 then upgrade... WinME isn't a great solution based on reputation.

And dont' apologize for being new, we all were, and still are at different places - read, ask, learn and share... it's makes for a great community!

windows Me is Microsofts way to look and act more like Macintosh, I was running it for a while and decided to go back to Win98. It ran very unstable, you then lose all Dos functionality if you use it, You do end up with more Multimedia Junk but to me its not worth it when win98 is so much more stable.

Just so you know it's nearly unanimous.... :)

Don't bother with WinME. I've yet to hear of ONE user who was really satisfied. There might be one out there, but I'd wonder about that person when/if I did find him or her...;)

I have ONE customer who insists that ME is better than 98, even if it cost him megabucks for me to fix his computer every week. X-) Cheers,
Jim

Says it all really, doesn't it? I've also found there is a better, wider choice of apps. to be had for Win98. No doubt this will change in the future but for now I'm sticking with 98se. Andy.

As long as customers want us to fix things (Even when we inform them of alternatives or that it really does not need it) who are we to disagree. The old saying of the "The customer is always right" applies. And they know it. X-) James Collins

Or as I tell my clients, "I will clean your toilet for a $100 an hour".

winme also does more things for you, usually making doing anything a tad more difficult; it hides menu options that u never use, so when u do need them...hope u read everything well, theres usually a 'show all options button',, and drivers for devices..and aol...and, well, there are many things that dont suit winme, and it doesnt suit anyone except novices, to my knowledge, and btw, i detest that they are doing away with dos. imho.

Hey,

Basically, WinME is the latest home user version. Win2K is for businesses, ME is for Home users.
If you want very little to play with, and arn't looking for anything technical, then ME is fine. It works fine for (some) games, few word docs and such like. If you are looking for a more rounded, powerful and more comprehensive package, Win2k/98SE is the packed for you. (I personally love Win2k. A much better OS than 98. Shame about the price!) And I agree with SpaceKowBoy, I'm Pro-DOS!!!!!!

(And don't worry about the newbie thing. So were we all. I don't know much about Macs, nothing about Office XP and clueless when it come to programming!)
