I heard its possible to test a power supply with an ohm meter. Can anyone direct me to were I can find information on this.

Thanks

A technician can. Your asking the question indicates you are not a technician.

For your sake , don't do it.

maidencailin,

Of the many ways you could get hurt trying this, there is also the possibility that the power supply could be damaged. Run without a resistance load on it so that you could test the leads would cause failure of the power supply within minutes if not sooner.

You can buy a power supply tester at a local pc shop
for about $20.

What exactly is it on the PSU that you want to "test"? Is it actually faulty, or are you just trying to eliminate faults on a PC that doesn't work? An ohmmeter will check the dc resistance of a circuit - perhaps what you're trying to check is voltage output?

Useful as the above link is, I'd urge caution here! Regrettably ATX PSU wire colour codes are not standard, and the PWR_OK pin is not always connected to a gray wire. On a 20-pin ATX power connector, pin nbr 8 is the PWR_OK connection.

Aye, I can tell you from personal experience that a Direct jolt from a PSU is far from pleasant.

Was your belt off the external cabling, or had you been delving about amongst the innards? [surprise]

I was tired and idiotic and switched on an AT power supply via the switch on it. The insulation had been removed from the switch and it was outside the case.

A stupid thing to do really, but at least it taught me not to take chances.

Easily done if you're tired and in a hurry, which of course is always the worst time to be "playing" with such lethal stuff... There are times when it's necessary to check that type of PSU outside of the case. I usually try and use the on/off mains switch on the wall or bench socket to avoid getting my fingers on or near those connectors.

Glad you're still here to tell the tale, and hopefully it'll be a timely reminder to us all to be careful where electricity is concerned.
