I have two routers: Router A and Router B. I’m using BRI Isdn between them. I cannot use static routes for a number of reasons on the routers (as this forms part of a much larger WAN). I am required to use dynamic routing (rip or igrp) between them but I need to control the routing updates.

According to Cisco, snapshot routing is the solution. My snapshot routing works fine and I can run a ping (for example) between the two routers but only during the active period of the snapshot. During the quiet period if I run a ping nothing happens. If I understand the following document correctly I should be able to do so: as the fourth line under the graphic says; “Aside from this snapshot interval, the isdn line activates only when traffic demands.” I have no access-lists implemented and I have permit ip on my dialer-list. Can anyone help me please?

Are you pinging from the router or a host on the network where the dialer-list is applied? I'm not sure that traffic originating on the router will generate the call. This is because that the source address of a ping is generally the interface on which it will leave the router. Try an extended ping where you specify the source address as being the interface where the dialer-list resides.

Have you defined interesting traffic including icmp ping?
Just a thought.

Thanks a million for your replies, I managed to lay my hands on two 3600's and configured them the same as the two 1600's and find that it worked first time round. I'm sure it must have something to do with an image on one of the two 1600's, perhaps corruption or the likes.
