I have acquired a 15g SCCI drive that I plan to install in a PII machine that I am building for my grandson running Win 98. This will be the only HD installed along with a CD ROM drive. I do not have any instructions as I asquired the drive used. How do I go about installing the drive, what is different for a SCCI other than a need to terminate the drive? Many thanks!

You are going to need a SCSI adapter to plug into a PCI slot on the motherboard. Win98 should install the drivers required to operate the drive. Since the SCSI drive is the only HD in the system, you should set its ID to 0 (most SCSI boot drives need to be set to 0), however, the setup program that comes with the SCSI adapter will tell you which ID to set the drive at to boot. Typically, setting the drive to 0 means removing (or parking) all the jumpers.

You will need a boot disk that will support a SCSI drive. I think the standard Win98 boot disk does but you can check it by looking at the Config.sys file on the floppy. It must have a line that reads:

Device = aspi?dos.sys OR
Device = aspi8u2.sys

? = 2, 4, or 8 and will depend on your SCSI adapter type.
