I have a friend with a Win 2K box who wants to utilize a HP CD Writer Plus external drive. She uses this drive as a means to move data, do backups, etc. on her laptop and desktop machines.

The actual problem is that when she loads a CD into that drive, her PC hangs for a long, long time until it recognizes the CD in that drive. While it's doing what ever, she can't do anything else with the PC.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the super long delay and what we might be able to do to stop it from happening?

Have her check the eventviewer to see if there's any warning or error associated with the drive.

start --> run --> eventvwr
