I have a friend who has a HP computer running WinXP Home and about every 30 minutes or so it freezes. The computer has a40gb HDD, 128 of Ram, a Celeron CPU a PS2 mouse, a HP printer and a CD/RW. Nothing has been added or subtracted since it's purchase new 18 months ago and I have4 checked the following:-
1)Checked the CPU fan
2)Checked all connections to the hard drive and motherboard
3) Removed and replaced the video card, and the RAM
Any helpfull suggestions would be appreciated........Dave

The obvious reply will be ... re-install XP.
There is really no way we can tell you from here.
It could be the power supply, the RAM, a driver, a DLL or just about any other thingie running in the background like spyware, virus, and so on.

Thank you. I think I will advise him to toddle off to the nearest HP dealer.....Dave

I won't argue with taking it to the dealer, but you can try to narrow down the problem first. At the very least, you'll have more info to give to HP.

1) When does the freeze happen? If it is within any particular application, definitely make a note of that. Also if it's not caused by any one app, try to detect a pattern of behavior. Perhaps it only happens when the system is extremely busy for long periods of time (which would indicate overheating).

2) At what temp does the freeze occur? You can download a utility to read the CPU and motherboard temp from the BIOS (there are tons of them out there). Alternatively, you can simply restart the PC immediately after the freeze occurs and enter the BIOS. If you try it that way though, it's best not to use the reset button instead of the power switch if that's an option.

G'Day cdogg,
Here is an update of hardware. CPU = AMDK-6, 256mb Ram, Inbuilt sound and NVidia Video. It has been working fine up to now. One change has been made. The USB mouse wasn't functioning so we conected a PS2 mouse which works fine until the computer freezes. I have checked the Power supply fan and the Cpu fan together with a General purpose fan in the tower. All are working. I removed the Ram (1 Stick -256 mb) and the video card and reseated them. It still freezes intermitently and there does not appear to be a pattern. Hardware devices shows all is OK. I have sent them to the nearest repairer and will advise you of the result. Thank you for your interest.......Dave from OZ
