All of a sudden, my PC started giving me an error sound about every five seconds. I went to Control Panel > Sounds and was able to determine that the error sound was issued on a Device Connect (the same as when I connect an external drive to a USB port). I changed the sound associated with Device Connect to none. I was still getting it. Then, I found that the same sound was coming from Device Disconnect, so I made it none.

I am no longer getting the anoying sounds, but I know I still have a problem that is causing a Device Disconnect and a Deviced Connect (or visa versa) to occur repeatedly every 5 seconds or so. What is causing this?

My PC is a Dell Latitude D810 running Windows XP Professional

Does it still occur if you remove all attached hardware such as USB things?

Have you tried uninstalling everything USB in the Dervice Manager, rebooting and allowing Windows to rediscover them?

Of course with sound disabled you wont know whether anything you try works or doesn't.

Are there any Bluetooth or Wireless accesories close by that could be the source of your annoyance?

Have a look through some of these links, see if you can get a few ideas.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

See if setting the Bios to Safe Defaults does anything. What do the USB entries in the Bios look like, is everything in order?

Thank you linney,

I reattached the sound files for debugging. Then, I decided to try disconnecting each USB device, one-by-one. And I got lucky. The first one that I disconnected, an external TV Tuner, eliminated the problem.

You're welcome. All you have to do now is fathom out why that device is behaving in such a way. Perhaps an E-mail to the manufacturer will suffice, or you could just Google for an answer.
