I'm running an AMD K62 500MHz CPU in an Gigabyte GA-5AX MB, 256 SDRam, I have an 8M Graphics card, and a Creative SB 128 PCI sound card.
Every time I try to play a Midi file or an Audio CD my computer hangs, not even Ctrl/Alt/Del will work, I have all the latest drivers for my hardware, and have even flashed the Bios to try and solve the problem. I have no conflics in the device manager, and the only thing sharing the IRQ with my sound card is an ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ steering. This is driving me nuts, I'm getting to the stage where I think a big stick is the answer, also re-formatting isn't the key either, it's been done at least 5 times in this last week. Thx in advance.

I forgot to add, I'm using Windows 98, lol sorry

If you ctrl + alt + del and 'end task' on all but explorer will it play then?

Hi, Is this a newly built and has never worked, or did it just start happening after software or hardware has been added or changed?

just a few thoughts, type "sysedit" in the run box and see if anything is loading from Win.ini. Any entries following run = or load = could be causing a conflict. I don't think programs with 16 bit drivers will appear in Device Manager.

Also:
Does a jukebox like Media Player come up on the screen prior to lockup?

Does the same thing happen when you play a simple wav file that is in C:\Windows\Media ?

Can Windows media player be conflicting with another jukebox player that might be installed like Winamp, real player ,or musicmatch ? (They all seem to want to dominate any audio function).

Yes it is a newly built system, and I've now fixed the problem, in the device manager I clicked on CDRom, and noticed it was an LG drive, I remember reading something about DMA conflicts with LG drives and some motherboard chipsets, so I unchecke the DMA box in the device manager and voila, everything works fine. I took the time to explain the steps I took to fix the problem just in case anyone else has had the same thing happen. It's not just the LG Drive this happens with either, just it's more common with them. Fancy not knowing the manufacturer on my own CDRom lol. Thx for the tips though guys, I appreciate it :)
