I can't enable "Standby"

I have a new Dell 4600. I set the power scheme to go to "System Standby after 1 hour."

I did it once yesterday -- and I brought it out of standby, by pressing the power ON button. But now it won't go into Standby after an hour, as it should.

I re-set it a few times; I tried different lenghts of time, etc.

I can't seem to "persuade" it to go into standby.

Any suggestions?

Was the machine actually idle, for example was there a screensaver or background process running, this might reset the time factor of entering Standby?
