ok, i've got an amd 1.2 w/512megs ddr.. 2 30gig hds..
i'm also running win 98se..

ok.. now onto the problem.. the problem i BELIEVE is the hard drive.. what happens is, whenever i do things that really work on the drive.. the computer freezes.. and i get a loud, and constant BEEEEEEEEEEP until i reboot the comp..

last night i was tryin' to defrag.. of course, i got a few minutes of defragging before the computer went crazy on me.. and lately, its been starting to go crazy on me every once in a while.. also when i logon to my computer (and the network logon is at the startup) if i leave it there for like 2-5 minutes.. it crashes.. but if i hit "cancel" and it goes to 98, its fine.

also.. it tends to do this a LOT more when the room is around 72-74 degrees.. sometimes its so bad i can't even use the computer.. and i turn it off, leave the window open (cold north east temps) 15 minutes later, its 65 degrees.. and it seems to be working fine..

but what i'm not 100% sure on, is if its the hard drive, doesn't that also sound like a processor?? the only thing that makes me not think its a processor.. is i can do really heavy work.. and nothing happens, until i defrag, or wipe my drive clean, or when new software is installing.. bah.. anyone got any suggestions??

Worth checking inside the case that the CPU fan/heat sink is attached & working OK. Might need some new thermal paste & reseat the sink.

Does your mobo support temperature checking?

yes i believe it does, i just never check it.. what's a good range for the temperature to fall in to make sure its not the processor..

Around 30-40 (Celcius) when under load should be OK.
If it's a lot higher, then the cooling is probably insufficient/inoperative.
