I am trying to fix a Compaq deskpro xe 486. It gives me a message saying the system settings are missing. How do I get into the Bios?

With a setup disk on some.
Into the diagnostics partition on some, [F10] when you get the block cursor in the upper right corner. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

I tried to use a Windows 98 emergency boot disk to look at the harddrive, but the diagnostics said it had a bad fat table. When I tried to use FDISK it responded saying there were no hard disks found. I tried all kinds of different key combinations to get into the BIOS/CMOS. I also downloaded a diagnostic program from Compaq but when I tried to use it, it reported a read error while making the disks. One question I had was how the diagnostic program was suppose to work. Does it just extract several disks of programs or is it trying to read the hard drive?

I was thinking of buying a new Presario with a P4 1.5 Gig CPU. I don't know if I care for this type of proprietary system. I may just go with a custom built computer with a popular motherboard like Asus. I have had a lot of luck with my last custom built computer with an intel P II 350. I definitely like the genuine Intel CPU's. I think the trick is to buy a higher quality motherboard.
