I am currently working for a company which is taking a big slice out of the work force, and having only been at the co. for 2 years, I am getting somewhat worried.

I would like to move towards the IT management role, after spending 10 years in a technicians role, and do not have the oppurtunity to carry out much on the management front in my current position, and most of the job ads ask for some management experience.

What is the best way to get this experience other than having to go through several more jobs?

If your job does not give you the opportunity for leadership and mangement skills, get involved with outside organizations that will. Leadership positions in outside groups can demostrate to employers not only your management skills but motivation to advance and diversity.

You can't get management experience without manageing something. You're going to have to step through several management jobs to get that experience. But those jobs do not necessarily have to be with your current employer. As needcoffee said, outside groups can provide some opportunities.

- It seems that every organization needs voluteers to manage fund raising activities.
- Festivals/Carnivals, etc need managers and organizers.
- Church committees have managers
- Be the manager of the neighborhood watch program.
- Get on the PTA Board

You get the idea. To gain management experience, your going to have to manage other people and their tasks. Manageing yourself doesn't count - it's taken for granted.
