Hyperlinks Not Holding in Excel 2000

Hello, I'm using Excel 2000 and have a number of hyperlinks to different .tif files in another directory. The original spreadsheet is password protected. Now the links work immediately, but when I try to access to linked files the following day, I get a message that reads: The address of this site is not valid. Check the address and try again. If I edit the link, and just browse to the file, it appears and I select OK, without my having to dig for it. Then everything works again, until the next day.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? (I know, it's probably user error!)

tools, options, general tab, web options, files tab, uncheck update links on save
