Hello all, I have a user who is experiencing a very strange situation in Word. When she creates a new Word document and manually types in a hyperlink, she can't open it. However, the person she sends it to can. And vice versa, she can't open any hyperlink in any document sent to her. As a work around, she's been cutting and pasting the URL in Internet Explorer or Netscape to open it. She had MSOffice2000 on her workstation. I ran a repair, and that didn't help. I unistalled and installed MSOffice2000 again. Still nothing. I even upgraded her to MSOfficeXP, still nothing. I also cleaned the registry on her computer. And the settings in Word are identical to those on a computer that can do this. Does anyone else have any other suggestions or solutions. If so, please send to me directly at Robert_L_Clark@blm.gov

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, Robert. It's not that we don't trust you, but people requesting direct emails can be email collectors. :)
You should receive email notifications of any response here and at most other technical support forums.

Do they work in Excel?
In other words, is this associations to html files throughout her PC or is it something wrong with Word. If they work in Excel files, then do the steps to troubleshoot Word at
What KIND of links are they? Email? HTM/HTML links or ASP?? What's the extension of the links or is it ANY/ALL of them?

Way cool stuff:

Hi, thanks for the response. And sorry I broke any rules. I'm new to the online forums. It's just that I'm in my work e-mail more than I can keep checking back over here. Wasn't aware I automatically received any notification there. Again, my apologies.

Back to your questions. Yes, the user uses Excel. The hyperlinks do work there. But she only uses them in Word. As a test, I typed in a few commercial URL sites such as and But I do believe the majority of the links she uses are for our company website which is an htm link. Still none of them work when I try to test them. Also of note, that I didn't mention in the previous post, when you move the mouse over the hyperlink, you don't get the hand symbol. The arrow only remains. Just an FYI. Any ideas?

No apologies necessary. We all do it!

Is Word formatting the text AS a hyperlink? After typing a hyperlink does it turn into a hyperlink? (Become underlined and text turns blue?) If not, Tools-Autocorrect, Autoformat as you type tab. Check the "internet and network paths with hyperlinks" checkbox.

Could that be it?

Yes, Word is formatting the text as a hyperlink. It does become underlined and turn blue. But you just can't click on the darn thing.

IE was already installed. But I just uninstalled and reinstalled anyway. Still nothing.

She had Word2000. Then was upgraded to OfficeXP. I have a dialogue with someone on the officeexports as well. There wasn't anything there on this that I could find.
