I am planning for disaster recovery

1. I am using 2003 server's NTbackup with the exchange 2003 enhancement(adding 2k3 exch enhances thentbackup with exchange objects)

2. I have created a recovery storage group and have added a database to it which is not mounted yet

3. The information store/mailbox store is running and mailbox store has not been dismounted

4.I start using the NTbackup for 2003 server ent

5. I added the first storage group/mailbox store as the database to be backedup

6. This is a normal backup and i have chosen to not append to the existing file

7.backup completes

8. *** Now i want to restore the first storage group or restore to the recovery storage group, as i mentioned earlier when i backup sometimes i get the option to choose the recovery storage group to backup and i always see the first storage group. i tried to restore the first storage group and it asked restore to: i put the server name which is SERVER

then it asked for the temp location of the log file or pathc file ( which i dont understand where this would be) so i made a folder in the exchsrvr folder.

then as i clicked advanced it showed a section that saud restore to: i chose original path......

then i tried to restore and it fails all the time..

ps- when i backup my system i backup to a folder on desktop..i am not using any media for his backup/restore.

can someone please tell me what i am doing wrong...i try this procedure daily and it fails everytime

Run the backup of exchange to a seperate folder or drive contaner. Get a second exchange server online and restore to it instead. With a second online you can reduce the size of your backups by not backing up public folders. Use synch to replicate public folders. When you restore choose the second server to restore to. If you use a secondary backup software like Arcserve or Backup Exec you can do single mailboxes restores on the second server. Have the user point to the second server and life is good.
