Hi, i am just new in the web hosting industry and its hard for me to start in scratch =), i just want to know where is that httpd.conf file is located inside the webserver and how will you be able to open or access it so you can edit the three main parts of it which is the global, main server, and virtual host environment(correct me if im wrong). Also need to know is what is the most important part there to edit. thanks a lot. Im under training right now and im having problem with information overload... no body's teaching me here even if they know that i dont have any webhosting background, im so helpless .. thanks a lot

This is kinda like asking directions but not telling anybody where you're coming from isn't it? :) The directories where apache's cofiguration files are kept is refered to as the ServerRoot. Depending on your platform and/or distro, this could be just about any where. If you are running linux, you may want to look in /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf. If you have windows, I think the default location is C:/Program Files/Apache2/httpd/conf/apche.conf. You can also use the "Find" command. To edit it, you need a true text editor such as notepad. Some text editors insert format chars that can booger things up.

Thanks very much!! i got another question though.. (this sounds stupid) but how can i restart or stop service of apache, as well as dns service? i tried experimenting on commands but it seems like its not working. btw, im using linux and unix platform for this. Im so new to the webhosting environment, the training here is self study, and my only way to clear the questions in my mind is to talk with sum1, researching is good, but its not that easy specially if i don't really know what are the terms, subtopics im gonna research on... do you know any website that has this all? =) thanks very much for that info. and thanks for replying quickly =)

To stop apache

/path/to/you/apache/install/bin/apachectl stop

As for DNS, thats a linux specific question and depends on what DNS server you are running and a ton of other items.
