I'm looking at setting up a multi homed environment. Currently, we have a router connected to our primary ISP and want to use another router to connect to another ISP for redundancy and load balancing. Does HSRP play any part in the load balancing, or is it just used for the fail over, and BGP would be implemented for load balancing? Just looking for any best practices or helpful links.

Thanks.

Hi bginty,

Yes,HSRP would help in load balancing as well.
Not sure about BGP.

Cheers,

Actually HSRP does not do load-balancing on its own, it is strictly for failover. BGP can do load-balancing if multiple equal paths are available from the same router to a destination.

Depending on your environment and how much redundancy you want will determine the best link. I would suggest you look at these for more information about load-balancing in a multi-home environment.

Thanks for the info. I thought that HSRP was for fail over only, but was getting some conflicting info. from some other people.
