Have just set up a new Windows 2003 Server as domain controller and file server. There are 3 workstations.
Can I install a HP Scanjet 5590 Flatbed scanner onto the server, so that users can scan multipage documents into the file server?
Are there any problems with setting it up like this?
I'm new to this coming from a Unix background.
Many Thanks for any advice.
Rob

I would advise against this - you want to keep things like Scanners where users will be using them OFF servers. Servers are to serve - users (unless you're talking about a terminal server) should never be logging directly into a server. And it doesn't matter if it's a small business or not. Servers are most reliable when they are left to do their job - authenticate, serve files and printers, databases, e-mail, etc.

Thanks for that. Will do as you advise and put the scanner on a PC.
Regards
Rob

I think that's wise - 70% of Windows crashes are caused by hardware driver issues - adding a scanner is adding an unnecessary piece of hardware to the server that can increase the possibility of a crash (assuming there are 2003 drivers). That's on top of the issues I mentioned before.

Good luck.
