I have a PC with a HP ScanJet 5100C and a HP DeskJet 840C attached. The printer connects through the scanner.

Whenever I try to print from any application the whole system freezes and I have to switch off the PC.

When I disable the scanner everything works fine. I have tried updating both sets of drivers but this hasn't worked.

PC also runs Mcafees virus scan. I tried uninstalling this but this didn't work either.

There doesn't appear to be any conflicts.

any ideas?

Thanks

Can you print if you hook the printer directly to the parralel port? Did it work before?

How long do you wait before you shut off the computer when it freezes, maybe it's just taking a very long time to communicate. Sometimes may take a couple minutes, which is not acceptable for normal use, but could help us determine exactly where the problem lies. An option you may want to look into is a parralel switch box, usually pretty cheap for the convenience they provide.

What I would do if I had abouta 15 dollars and an open isa or pci slot is to install a 2nd lpt port. Connect your printer to the new card and both should work just fine.

the PC doesn't respond at all not matter how long you leave it.
