HP R80 will not print after power down

I replaced an old computre with a new one with XP home on it. The R80 is connected via the parallel port. Upon startup the printer works fine. However if the printer powers down it will not print again until I restart the computer. No better drivers are available from HP but there is some talk of the problem but the solutions all have to do with USB and this is parallel. any help will be appreciated.
