I have tried to replace a HP power supply (bestec atx-1956D) with another power supply the new power supply doesn't have the P7 connector that the old one has 3 pin flat connector (Black Green Black) the new supply has 4 pin square with two yellows and two blacks...anyone know what the voltage of these two connectors and if I can wire the three wire connector with the wires off of the 4 wire?
Any suggestions will be appreciated!

The square 4-pin connector on the new PSU is commonly +12vdc (yellow) and ground (black), and is usually for providing additional power for the CPU.

I'd suggest the original black-green-black HP connector is something unique to that manufacturer. Black suggests ground or earth, and green could be POWER ON. But I'm guessing... Is there any screen printing on the motherboard to give you a clue as to what this pin header might be for?

Other than that, tracing those wires back inside the PSU might reveal what's at their source. Some PSU manufacturers screen print their pcbs so you might get a clue there. However, great care should be exercised if you decide to open up the PSU. From your post it suggests that the PSU has failed, and despite this it's possible for some of the components within to still retain high voltage charges. If you are in any doubts about doing this, I'd suggest you leave it to a professional.

Good luck.

I have found out that the green black green three pin connector supplies power back to the power supply fan on older PS...so it is not nessisary on a new supply the fan gets the power internally...

Thanks for the response..
