I have tried everything with this notebook and it is still causing hairloss!

The notebook is an HP Pavilion ze4800us running xp home.

The guy it belongs to was complaining about a key being stuck on the keyboard. Basically it would boot up correctly and when you were prompted to log into Windoze, the password space would be automatically filled. I took the keyboard out and booted the machine up with an external keyboard attached, still filling out the password. I booted in safemode and luckily the admin account wasn't password protected, I found that the machine is constantly issuing key presses for the "Y" key! I initially thought that it could have been an OS problem but after reinstalling XP found that not to be the case, i have tried a spare hardrive with Linux on it and it is still the same. The only thing i can think of is a motherboard problem relating to the keyboard.

Just wondering if any of you guys have come across a similar problem or indeed the same problem and what you found to be the source of the problem?

Thanks for reading.

What type of keyboard are you using? serial or usb? If serial try usb, if usb try serial. If switching to the other stops the problem then its the motherboard. If not then its elsewhere and we will go from there.

I haven't tried a USB keyboard, but i did try a serial and the problem was still apparent. I have since called HP and it sounds like its a problem they have come across before. The only problem is that this unit is just out of warranty and the motherboards are quite expensive. Any ideas on where I could source one, from US or UK?
