I have a Dimension 8200 computer with a Deskjet 855C printer attached. When I print out a document, it will either print out the 1st page with no problem and then start shooting out garbage after that or do it on the 1st page.

I am running Windows 2000 SP4, IE 6.0 SP1. I have done the following with no luck:
Deleted the printer and reinstalled
Deleted the printer port and rebooted
Got into BIOS and configured the port for ECP & EPP
Deleted the printer and then deleted the directory under winnt\system32\spool32\drivers\w32x86 and reinstalled the printer.

I hooked a laptop up to the printer which also had 2000 w/SP4, installed the printer and it work just fine and dandy.

Have gone through the task manager and deleted all unneeded tasks and still no luck.

They have 4 Dimension computers and they are all doing the same thing.

Currently they have a HP LaserJet 5 attached to a computer that does all their printing but is proving a hassle when someone is working and someone else needs to print.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

- Create a network, and share the LJ5, so everone can use it without the hassle
- Get a better driver for the 855, then apply my first suggestion ;-)
- After changing the biossetting for the port ECP/EPP/SPP, did W2K re-recognize the port?

Deskjet's are known for their troublesome installation and (driver)workings, esp. the older models like the 8xx series

If the printer is a USB printer go to the HP website and look for their uninstall program.
HP Deskjet USB Supplemental Uninstaller

Unfortunately if I want to share this printer, it will be on another 2000 computer. It is using a parallel port and not buile for USB.

When I changed the ECP/EPP setting in BIOS, the port was still recognized.

HP does not make a seperate driver for the Deskjet due to the fact that it is included on the 2000 CD. I will do a search and see if can find another driver.

Thanks for the suggestions. If you have any more ideas, please let me know.

Finally got the printers to work but not sure why it now works. I went in and changed the parallel port address from 378h -> 3bch. After this was able to print. If anyone has an idea of how this fixed my problem or how it could have caused my problem, I would be appreciative.

Thanks

That 3bc would represent the original IBM PC monochrome display adapter optional parallel printerport. It was also later found on the Hercules monochrome graphics display adapter. A nice feature of this port is that it would almost in any case work perfectly.
Because of strange compatibility problems in the past, handling for this port may be more correct in this case.
This is the only real explanation I can imagine s-)
